It's Never a Good Sign When ...
... the cable guy says "Why do you have a Homedics power cord plugged into the back of the cable modem instead of the cable modem's Toshiba cord? The two power cords supply two different voltage outputs." Oh.
And so it turns out I somewhat fried the cable modem, causing my computer to freak for a week.
He gave me a new cable modem, properly attached the Toshiba power cord, and my computer's working again.
Oops. Bad me.

it's an honest mistake, really.
anyone could have done that.
Thanks for the pep talk, Teri. I'm feeling rather dumb this morning.
oh crap. sorry to hear that zed. when are they going to make everything wireless for crying out loud? we have far too many wires around our at-home computer, it's ridiculous.
I hate it when that happens. I did that to a brand new DSL modem I bought on eBay a few months back. I've never admitted it until now, I just threw away the evidence. Now that I have confessed I feel better. A little.
Confession is good for the soul, Nobody. :)
Yes, it is. I do feel better.
It all the designers fault.
Some labels might prevent future mishaps. I'm glad your are back up and working Zed!
Thanks, Sans! Me too!
I totally would have done that.
